Merry Pateuk

Merry Pateuk’s career reflects the remarkable growth and enduring values of the modern credit union movement. As one of Velera’s longest-tenured leaders, she helped guide the organization from its earliest days as a startup with a single line of business into a nationally respected industry partner serving hundreds of credit unions across the country. Her leadership, vision, and commitment to service have left an indelible mark on both Velera and the broader credit union industry.

Merry joined legacy PSCU in 1989 as the organization’s ninth employee. What followed was a professional journey spanning more than three decades and nearly every facet of the business. From the beginning, she demonstrated a rare combination of executional excellence and people-centered leadership—qualities that became foundational as the organization expanded in scale, scope, and influence. Her work helped shape Velera’s culture, strengthen its reputation, and position it as a trusted industry leader.

Throughout her career, Merry held leadership roles across Sales, Account Management, Marketing, Public Relations, Corporate Communications, and Corporate Relations. Each role contributed to building the organization’s brand, credibility, and resilience. In her final eight years as Senior Vice President of Industry Engagement, she emerged as a powerful advocate for credit unions nationwide. She played a key role in advancing education and engagement around critical legislative and public policy issues, including the Credit Card Competition Act and the ongoing credit card rate cap debate. Through these efforts, she helped prepare both employees and credit unions to participate in meaningful, informed advocacy that elevated the industry’s collective voice.

Central to Merry’s leadership has been her unwavering dedication to helping people thrive. She championed Velera’s commitment to employee financial wellness and led the creation of the “Financial Wellness Starts at Home” initiative. This program reinforced the belief that supporting credit union members begins with supporting the people who serve them—providing education, resources, and an added layer of financial confidence for employees and their families.
Merry’s influence extends far beyond her professional responsibilities at Velera. She has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to service across the credit union community, including her service on the Board of Directors of America’s Credit Union Museum. She has also served on the Board of the Community Impact Fund and the Advisory Board for Credit Unions for Kids, and has remained actively engaged with organizations such as the Filene Research Institute, Children’s Miracle Network, Credit Union Miracle Day, the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run, and the African American Credit Union Coalition. Her dedication to global credit union development is reflected in her achievement of both the Credit Union Development Educators (CUDE) and Africa Development Educators (ADE) designations.

 

Known for her integrity, wisdom, and generosity of spirit, Merry has mentored countless colleagues and forged trusted partnerships across the industry. She consistently embodied the credit union philosophy of “people helping people,” serving as a steady, credible voice during moments of growth and challenge alike. Her legacy is visible in the institutions she strengthened, the people she inspired, and the movement she so passionately championed.
