John Normandeau

John Normandeau’s leadership was never defined by volume. It was defined by consistency, humility, and the quiet conviction that every person, and every detail, mattered.

As CEO of BestSource Credit Union, John often arrived before 8 am. The credit union was headquartered in the lower level of a Macy’s store, and the surrounding parking lot was not technically his responsibility. Still, when John saw litter on his walk inside, he picked it up. It was a small act, easily overlooked, and entirely representative of how he led: he noticed what needed care and took responsibility without waiting for recognition.

A former CFO, John brought deep financial discipline to the credit union. He understood the numbers, kept expenses low, and approached stewardship with seriousness. Just as important, he understood that strong leadership does not mean surrounding yourself with people who think exactly as you do. John intentionally built a team with different experiences, perspectives, and strengths. He welcomed expertise in human potential, marketing, member service, and areas beyond his own, giving people the trust and space to contribute fully.

John cared for the team as a whole and for each individual within it. He asked about employees’ lives, ate lunch beside them in the breakroom, and arrived at potlucks and chili cookoffs with a dish to share. His quick sense of humor often eased tension during challenging conversations. These gestures were not separate from his leadership. They were his leadership.

His deepest commitment was to the members BestSource served, many of whom were Macy’s employees navigating the distinctive realities of retail work. John listened closely to their needs and supported the creation of loan and checking products designed around their lives. When members faced tragedy, he encouraged thoughtful underwriting and compassionate solutions. He took member calls personally, offering empathy, dignity, and practical support at moments when all three were needed most.

John was never loud or boisterous. He never took credit. He stood with his team and his members in a way that showcased servant leadership and true compassion. John represents the very best of credit unions.

John’s legacy lives in the culture of care he modeled every day and the way he invested deeply in the leaders around him. Among them was Tansley Stearns, now president & ceo of orsa credit union, who credits John’s belief in her with shaping her life and career. His willingness to see potential, extend trust, and encourage emerging leaders has multiplied his influence far beyond the walls of BestSource.
