Cathy Brorson has always embodied the heart of the credit union movement including service, education, and community empowerment. Beginning in 2000 when she joined Kitsap Credit Union (KCU) as Outreach Coordinator, Cathy worked tirelessly to strengthen both the credit union and the communities it serves. Now retired, her legacy lives on in every program she built and every life she touched.
Those who worked with Cathy often describe the experience as being around a joyful powerhouse! She radiates enthusiasm, creativity, and passion— pouring her boundless energy into the credit union movement. Most importantly, she has always dedicated her energy to helping people grow their financial capabilities through access to quality financial education.
Often working quietly behind the scenes, Cathy’s influence was profound. She created and expanded financial literacy programs in schools and across the community, leading with Kitsap Credit Union’s outreach initiatives that encouraged employees to share their time and talents, and partnered with local nonprofits to strengthen their mission for the good of all.
Her efforts translated into thousands of volunteer hours, and countless dollars invested in local organizations. With a gift for both teaching and inspiring, Cathy’s efforts went as far as performing a ukulele-backed song before the Senate Early Education Committee to underscore the importance of financial literacy, a creative act that sparked TV coverage, a CD, and invitations to perform at credit union events nationwide.
Cathy’s leadership extended far beyond KCU. She founded and led the Credit Union Development Council of Washington for 11 years, served more than 20 years on the Financial Education Public-Private Partnership, chaired the National Youth Involvement Board, became a Credit Union Development Educator (CUDE), and was a founding board member of the KCUCares Foundation, helping to establish the credit union’s charitable giving arm.
More than her accomplishment, Cathy’s spirit defined her legacy. She freely shared her knowledge, supported colleagues, and inspired others to lead with kindness, generosity, and purpose. She lived the credit union philosophy of people helping people every single day.
Even in retirement, Cathy’s legacy continues to shine through the programs she built, the leaders she mentored, and the community she so deeply cared for. She never sought the spotlight, but her impact is undeniable.
For her dedication, creativity, and unwavering belief in the power of community, Cathy Brorson stands as a true unsung hero of the credit union movement.
