Museum Needs Volunteers

Volunteers are sought for New Hampshire’s newest museum, America’s Credit Union Museum.

MANCHESTER, N.H. 3/25/03 –“We are looking for men and women of all ages to be volunteers for a variety of areas,”said Peggy Powell, executive director of the museum. “We need tour guides, as well as those interested in working on special projects and helping with special events.

Those interested should call Powell at 603-629-1553.

America’s Credit Union Museum celebrated its grand opening in October and is now open to the public. A million dollar renovation was made to the Boivin residence at 418-420 Notre Dame Avenue. The museum presents a complete history of America’s credit union movement. In 1908 Monsignor Pierre Hevey established the first credit union in the United States in Manchester so that mill workers would have a safe place to save their money and access reasonable credit. Today there are 10,000 credit unions in the United States, representing 82 million members.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday or for groups by appointment.
